NZDF Health is responsible for maintaining, improving, and restoring the health of the Defence Force to ensure its operational effectiveness. About the role Healthcare | Navy Reserve | Officers&Management Entry type: Officer entry, Navy Reserve Daily Initial Rate: $418 Location: Various locations The NZDF Medical Officer provides high-quality care to defence personnel both at home and during operations, including on exercise and deployment. The Defence Medical Officer is a generalist role encompassing primary care, occupational medicine, sports/musculoskeletal medicine, expeditionary medicine, pre-hospital care, and acute care. The Medical Officer will deliver this care across land, sea, and air environments.As a Reserve Medical Officer, your career begins with experience in a Defence Health Centre, focusing on pre-hospital care, occupational medical advice, and command support. Opportunities include providing medical support during exercises, land-based operations, and deployments as a Medical Officer on ships.The role requires Medical Officers to work independently and as part of a team, adapting to mission needs. Minimum requirements: Registration with the NZ Medical Council Completion of postgraduate year 2 (PGY2) Desirable qualifications and experience: Primary care delivery experienceVocational qualification and registration in a primary healthcare specialty (general practice, acute care, occupational health) Experience in pre-hospital emergency care (PHEC) Experience in sports and exercise medicine Experience in occupational health Additional beneficial experience includes working in multidisciplinary teams, austere or expeditionary medicine, and prior military service.Applicants must meet citizenship and security requirements to obtain SV security clearance and must be free of criminal convictions in the past two years. During the first 11 months, recruits will learn core military, maritime, and leadership skills.Training: Junior Officer Common Training (JOCT): Starts with nine days at Devonport Naval Base and the Tamaki Leadership Centre in Whangaparaoa. Job Training: Tailored case-by-case training developed in consultation with the NZDF's Chief Medical Officer and local Defence Health Centre leadership.Career Progression: After JOCT, promoted to Surgeon Lieutenant, with further promotions based on experience and training. Career advancement includes increased rank and salary. Course dates will be provided by your Candidate Engagement Facilitator during recruitment. Remuneration: As a Navy Reserve Officer, you will receive a daily rate plus holiday pay allowance. The NZDF contributes 4% to KiwiSaver on top of your contributions.
