Join to apply for the Wairua Practitioner role at Auckland City Mission - Te Tāpui Atawhai Application deadline: 28 May 2025 Wairua Practitioner – He Ara Whakamana Tangata Fixed Term Contract: Now - April 2026 About The Role This role works within the He Ara Whakamana Tangata team, with its primary purpose to meet the needs of residents with an existing or suspected mental illness, which may or may not be wairua driven, with associated risk and/or impairment, who are navigating living within a permanent residential setting.Full Time Location: Central Auckland Application Closes: 28 May 2025 Community and Social Service Specialist The Wairua Practitioner will work in partnership with the Mental Health Nurse (MH Nurse), drawing upon taonga tuku iho— the knowledge and lessons of ancestors — to address the mental health, spiritual, and whānau needs of residents seeking healing for spiritual distress within a western medical health system.We value team development and career growth; mentorship and on-the-job learning are integral to this role. Key Duties Provide blessings and conduct clearings for residents as required, at least weekly. Collaborate with MH Nurse to evaluate residents/whānau wairua/health needs and provide appropriate support.Assist in discharge planning and referrals to healthcare providers and support agencies. Implement frameworks to review and improve services, enhance Māori capabilities, and promote Māori development. Identify clinical risks and take appropriate actions to ensure safety for residents, whānau, and staff.Skills&Experience Proven experience in the mahi a wairua sector, endorsed by a reputable Tohunga/Wairua Practitioner. Knowledge of Tikanga informed care, understanding of culture, power, and Te Tiriti. Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Empathy for issues related to trauma, mental health, addiction, poverty, and homelessness.Strong understanding and practice within te ao Māori. Relevant skills and experience may also come from voluntary work, church, marae, or iwi/whānau responsibilities.
