Summary The Physician Assistant (PA) is a licensed provider responsible for assessing and managing various patient populations, including medical and surgical cases. This includes diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, developing care plans, and ongoing evaluation. Essential Functions Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to a designated patient population in ambulatory, inpatient, operative, and procedural settings.Performs complete histories and physical examinations. Orders, interprets, and evaluates laboratory and diagnostic tests. Develops care and follow-up plans based on diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings. Orders medications and writes prescriptions following organizational and regulatory policies.Ensures timely and high-quality documentation, including admission, progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes, and discharge summaries. Performs bedside procedures appropriate to the patient population. Required for All Jobs Performs other duties as assigned. Complies with all policies and standards.Patient Care (indirect/direct) required: Yes The Neurosurgery PA will participate in inpatient care as part of the Neurosurgery team at South Shore Hospital, including: *Rounding with the neurosurgical team *Performing inpatient and ER consultations and follow-ups *Collecting clinical data for studies and performing procedures such as:oStaple/suture removal/placement oWound care/packing oLumbar drain placement/removal oLumbar punctures oNGT placement oCentral and arterial line placement oSpine braces/cervical collar placement and removal oDraping and patient positioning *Serving as first-call for ED and inpatient consultations, triaging and consulting neurosurgeons as needed*Potentially serving as OR first assistant *Work schedule may vary, including additional shifts, night shifts, and backup coverage *Maintains ACLS certification *Capable of orienting, onboarding, and training new PAs *Involved in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives Education Master's Degree in Physician Assistant required.No experience in lieu of degree accepted. Licenses and Credentials Physician Assistant license in the state required. Experience Experience as a licensed Physician Assistant preferred. Knowledge, Skills&Abilities Skilled in taking medical histories and assessing conditions. Ability to maintain quality standards. Calm and effective in emergencies. Able to interpret and apply guidelines. Clear communication and effective relationship-building skills.
