Te Haeata/The Opportunity We are currently seeking an experienced and proactive individual to join our Legal and Research Counsel/Advisor team. This role requires enthusiasm, initiative, and a keen eye for detail to provide timely, robust, and accurate legal support to New Zealand's Coroners and the Coroners Court.Job Description Primarily, you will be drafting Coroners' findings and recommendations. Additionally, you will provide high-quality legal and research support to the Coroners and assist with inquests. You will also engage with community members during difficult times, help make New Zealand safer, build relationships with judiciary members, and gain exposure to a fascinating area of law.Duties Include Preparing initial drafts of Coroners' findings under the guidance of Coroners and the team manager Conducting legal research as requested by the Chief Coroner or Coroners Appearing in the Coroners Court as counsel or junior counsel, once holding a valid practicing certificate Assisting in the analysis of legislation, coronial, and medical lawŌ Pūkenga/Skills And Experience No candidate will meet every qualification, but if your experience is relevant and you believe you can bring value, we want to hear from you! You will have: A Bachelor of Laws degree (mandatory) Excellent drafting and legal research skills Legal drafting experience (advantageous)Meticulous attention to spelling, grammar, and detail 1-2+ years PQE Strong interpersonal skills Excellent time and self-management skills Experience working with legal deadlines An understanding of Te Ao Māori, Te Reo Māori, and tikanga High resilience and ability to handle sensitive, traumatic materialMō mātou/About us At Te Tāhū o te Ture - the Ministry of Justice, we aim to strengthen trust in Aotearoa's legal system.
