Senior Science Analyst, Christchurch

As a Regional Council we're responsible for flood protection, public transport, civil defence, and more.The main focus of this role is management of large environmental datasets ensuring data is high quality, available and fit for purpose. The primary dataset is collected and provided by parties external to Environment Canterbury but used extensively for internal regulatory and science processes. Data collection and provision is governed by national regulations and the role will work with internal and external parties creating innovative ways to ensure data is well managed and up to standard.More about the role: Innovate quality control processes to gain efficiencies and improve the quality of large environmental datasets Be involved in projects that aim to optimise data pipelines and data management processes Share technical expertise with team members to support and train them in data analytics practices (e.g. writing scripts for automation)Collaborate with other teams and use a customer focused approach to respond to internal and external data requests Collaborate with the Digital Solutions team to ensure mutual understanding of requirements and dependencies and delivery of technical solutions Communicate with industry partners to ensure data quality and timeliness standards are adhered to and processes are improvedActively contribute to successful outcomes of a newly created Environmental Data Integrity team The indicative salary range for this role is $74,000– $91,000 per annum depending on skills and experience. Permanent term full-time 40 hours per week located at 200 Tuam Street, Christchurch. You’re a senior data analyst and have solid experience working with large data sets that require an innovative management approach. You are adept at writing code for quality control purposes. You are an excellent communicator with strong relationship building skills and have a desire for continuous learning and innovation.To enjoy this role, you’ll have: Experience in data and database management, particularly managing large datasets An understanding of SQL databases and data architecture Python skills and experience using GitHub for data projects Experience in data governance, good data practices, working with scientific data, including quality coding of environmental data and familiarity with National Environmental Monitoring Standards (NEMS).Excellent communication skills to work with industry and other groups in the organisation A knowledge of environmental data collection processes would be helpful but not essential You will require a MSc degree in a relevant field with two years experience, or BSc degree with five years professional experience.Our values underpin everything we do.
