Obstetrics and Gynaecology Registrar | Annual Recruitment 2026 at Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand Waitaha Canterbury, Christchurch Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.About the Role Christchurch Women's Hospital handles approximately 6,000 births annually and offers tertiary Obstetrics and Gynaecology services, including Gynae Oncology and maternal-fetal medicine for the entire South Island. The hospital provides a wide range of acute and elective obstetric services. The birth suite includes 12 birthing rooms, 2 obstetric theatres, 9 assessment/pre-labour beds, 2 acute observation beds, and 4 beds in PACU. It operates 24 hours daily with 2 registrars, a SHO, SMO, and a dedicated anaesthetic team. An elective caesarean section list is scheduled daily.The gynaecology service includes inpatient and outpatient care, with 27 inpatient beds, a 5-bed assessment unit, and separate units for colposcopy and outpatient hysteroscopy. There are four elective lists per day (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday), three on Wednesday, and a senior registrar list on Friday morning. A dedicated gynaecology acute list operates on Wednesday and Friday afternoons. The early pregnancy unit is nurse-led, supported by a medical management protocol for miscarriage, and offers a manual vacuum aspiration (MVAC) service for surgical management without anesthesia, along with other minor procedures.Patient care is organized within a team structure. The after-hours roster is arranged in two-week blocks to optimize team-based training, with long days scheduled outside these blocks. Weekend staffing includes 2 SHO until 4 pm, 2 registrars, and an SMO, with a second SMO on call for ward rounds.
