Anaesthesia Registrar including the South Island Training Scheme | Annual Recruitment 2026 at Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand Waitaha Canterbury, Christchurch Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.About the Role The Department of Anaesthesia consists of 84 Specialist Anaesthetists, 5 Medical Officers/Provisional Fellows, 26 Anaesthetic Registrars, 6 Senior House Officers, Anaesthetic Technicians, 2 Staff Nurses, and 3 Secretarial/Administrative staff. The Department is based at Christchurch Hospital and provides anaesthetic services to Canterbury. It covers locations including Christchurch Hospital, Christchurch Women's Hospital (High-Risk Obstetrics), and Burwood Hospital (Orthopaedics&Plastics/Max-Fax). The annual workload is approximately 26,000 anaesthetics, with about 40% being acute admissions. We are fully accredited for all levels of training by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) and have strong academic links with the University of Otago through the Christchurch School of Medicine. Registrars based at Christchurch are rotated to Intensive Care and Timaru Hospital on a 3-6 monthly basis, gaining exposure to a full range of anaesthesia sub-specialties including:Paediatrics Vascular and Interventional Complex Head and Neck Surgery Cardiothoracic Surgery Please specify in your application if you are applying as an introductory trainee to the South Island Training Scheme (i.e., within your first year of anaesthetic experience). A willingness to develop an equity lens and skillset to assist Māori and other minority groups.
