Job Category: Registered Nurse/Preadmission Nurse Job Description About the Role We are looking for a motivated Registered Nurse to join our nurse-led service and support improved access to care for patients on public health waiting lists. In this role, you will provide safe, effective, and evidence-based nursing care to patients being outsourced from the public sector for elective procedures at Mercy Hospital.As part of a multidisciplinary team, the Registered Nurse– Outsourcing will carry out pre-operative assessments following established guidelines and protocols. This position supports improved patient outcomes, reduces waiting times, and strengthens the partnership between public and private healthcare providers by ensuring timely and high-quality surgical care.Specific duties include Completing comprehensive pre-operative assessments to determine surgical readiness Conducting phone-based health assessments, triaging information, and documenting clearly Applying outsourcing criteria to confirm hospital acceptance Entering patient data promptly into information systemsLiaising with Contracts staff to highlight complex cases for accurate cost estimates Working closely with patients, whānau, and healthcare teams This is a permanent, full-time position (1.0 FTE, 40 hours per week), worked Monday to Friday on a rotating roster. We are open to considering a part-time job share arrangement. If you are interested in part-time work as part of a job share, please state your preferencein your cover letter.Desired Skills and Experience Skills and Experience Registered Nurse with the Nursing Council of New Zealand and a current practising certificate (as per the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003). Experience in pre-operative, surgical, or ambulatory care. Ability to identify clinical risks and coordinate appropriate responses.Effective communicator, able to educate patients with varying health literacy and cultural needs, in person and by phone. Strong documentation and diagnostic interpretation skills with attention to detail. Confident user of IT systems with fast, accurate typing and high computer literacy. Professional, with strong interpersonal skills and able to work independently or as part of a small team.To be eligible for employment at Mercy Hospital Dunedin, applicants will be required to provide vaccination history.
