Medical Registrar, Respiratory Advanced Trainee - 2026 Training Year Hawke’s Bay Fallen Soldier’s Hospital, Medical Registrar – Respiratory Advanced Trainee Permanent, Full-time, Rostered and Rotating Shifts Minimum 6 month or 12 month placement Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders, grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.About the Role We are seeking a Medical Registrar Advanced Trainee in Respiratory to join our Medical Department at Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers Memorial Hospital for the 2026 placements starting on 2 February and/or 3 August. The Respiratory&Sleep Department is a regional service covering various aspects of respiratory medicine. This position is accredited for 12 months of core respiratory training, supported by 7 permanent Respiratory Physicians, providing ongoing supervision and diverse training opportunities. The role offers exposure to general and sub-specialty respiratory interests, enabling trainees to develop their expertise. Our previous trainees have successfully secured further positions in Australasian Tertiary Centres.Services include bronchoscopy, pleural procedures, outpatient respiratory and sleep medicine, and opportunities in areas like obstructive airway disease, lung cancer, interstitial lung disease, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, TB, and complex lung diseases. We provide a comprehensive education program, participate in tertiary multidisciplinary meetings, and support ASUM certification in thoracic ultrasound.The pulmonary function lab includes CPET, ambulatory sleep services, and teaching for RMOs, nurses, and allied health professionals. Trainees can perform bronchoscopies, participate in pleural procedures, manage acute admissions, and engage in outpatient clinics. With no competition from other respiratory trainees, this role offers extensive hands-on experience across clinical, procedural, and educational domains.After-hours work will be in Acute General Medicine. There is also potential to extend training by rotating through other accredited medical registrar roles suitable for both advanced and basic training. About the Team/Service/Location The Medical Department includes nine ward teams, 28 dual-trained Internal Medicine Physicians, 24 Registrars, 15 House Officers, and Trainee Interns. We foster a collaborative and supportive work environment with rotations in Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, General Medicine, Renal, Medical Oncology, and Haematology.Hawke’s Bay Hospital is a 400-bed secondary hospital serving over 180,000 people, offering a range of medical and surgical services with regional ICU and flight support, and tertiary support for cardiac, thoracic, plastic, and neurosurgery from Wellington.
