About the Role As a General Medicine Registrar, you will work as part of a general medicine team with Consultants, 1 House Officer, and 1 General Medicine Registrar. Duties include caring for ward patients who have been admitted, admitting new patients, and performing day stay procedures with appropriate supervision and training, such as chest drains, lumbar punctures, and ascitic procedures.The hours are 8.00 am to 4.00 pm daily, with long days from 4.00 pm to 10.00 pm. Night shifts are from 10.00 pm to 8.00 am. Weekends (Saturday and Sunday) are from 8.00 am to 10.00 pm. Nelson Hospital is accredited for rural hospital training and offers a variety of certified rotations. Teaching is a strong component of our department, and you will be expected to participate in and provide teaching.Nelson provides excellent opportunities to upskill in all areas of medicine. The only other admitting specialty is cardiology, which allows for a broad spectrum of medical cases daily. You will have the opportunity to perform procedures such as chest drains, lumbar punctures, and ascitic procedures with appropriate supervision and training.About the Team/Service/Location Our Nelson General Medical Team provides outstanding clinical experience in undifferentiated Acute Adult Medicine, supported by the Cardiology Team. Our team of General Physicians are dual specialists with sub-specialty interests including Endocrinology/Diabetes, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Oncology and Haematology, Renal Medicine and Intensive Care, Respiratory Medicine, Rheumatology, and Neurology. These specialties are mainly outpatient-based, supporting inpatient care and consultation. All registrars are expected to participate in outpatient clinics with their allocated supervising specialist, with options to accommodate specific clinical interests upon request.Health NZ Nelson Marlborough is the main healthcare provider for the Te Tau Ihu region, with nearly 3,000 employees, making us Nelson and Marlborough’s largest employer.
