Personal preferences will be taken into account. 4.0FTE Specialty Non-Training Registrar Positions: a Urology Registrar, a Vascular Registrar, and an ENT Registrar. These positions provide hands-on experience in Urology, Vascular, and ENT, under the supervision of experienced consultants, offering an excellent opportunity to develop sub-specialty surgical skills.2.0FTE Surgical Relief Non-Training Registrar Positions: Providing cover for General Surgery, Vascular, Urology, and ENT registrars when they are on nights, fatigue days, or on-call weeks. This role is dynamic, allowing exposure to a variety of surgical sub-specialties, ensuring a broad and varied clinical experience.These are non-training positions providing an excellent opportunity for Registrars seeking to gain experience across multiple surgical specialties, with a mix of focused roles and relief opportunities in a dynamic and collegial team environment. We are committed to accommodating applicants' preferences wherever possible to support career aspiration and sub-specialty interests.It is our intention to change the roster next year, at which point you will be advised to participate in a 24/7 rotating Monday to Sunday roster. Prior to this change, you will work between 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday to Friday, with overnight on-call from 5:00 pm to 8:00 am, and weekends from 8:00 am Saturday to 8:00 am Monday.About the Team/Service/Location The General Surgery Department at Nelson Hospital provides comprehensive surgical services to the Nelson Marlborough region. The department covers a wide range of elective and acute general surgical procedures, including gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, endocrine, and laparoscopic surgery. Key features include fully equipped operating theatres, endoscopy suites, advanced diagnostic resources, a collegial team of General Surgery consultants, registrars, and house officers, and opportunities to gain experience across a broad spectrum of surgical conditions and procedures.Nelson Hospital’s Urology service offers diagnostic, elective, and acute care for urological conditions, including endoscopic procedures, ureteroscopy, laser stone management, urological cancers, diagnostic urodynamics, and outpatient procedures. As a Urology Registrar, you will gain hands-on experience in managing acute presentations, assisting in surgical procedures, and working closely with multidisciplinary teams.The ENT service at Nelson Hospital provides elective and acute care for head and neck conditions, including ear surgery, sinus and nasal procedures, management of throat, voice, and neck conditions, and Pediatric ENT care. As an ENT Registrar, you will develop skills in clinic-based procedures, assist in operating theatres, and manage acute ENT emergencies.Nelson Hospital’s Vascular Surgery service provides diagnostic and interventional care for arterial, venous, and lymphatic system conditions. Vascular Registrars will assist in both open and endovascular procedures, manage acute cases, and develop skills in vascular imaging and diagnostics. This non-training post, in the absence of a vascular fellow or dedicated vascular trainee, offers an excellent opportunity to develop vascular technical skills and gain patient care experience under the guidance of an experienced Vascular Surgeon and Vascular Nurse Practitioner. You will receive hands-on training in inward, clinic, and theatre skills, with the potential for increasing independence over the course of the year.About you: Provide patient care under consultant supervision, including in theatres, wards, clinics, and emergency settings. Participate in the acute on-call roster, including nights and weekends. Collaborate across surgical teams to ensure high-quality, patient-centred care. Surgical relief registrars will provide cover across General Surgery, Vascular, Urology, and ENT services during registrar absence due to nights, fatigue days, or on-call commitments.Skills and experience Eligible for an Annual Practising Certificate and General scope of practice with the Medical Council of New Zealand. PGY3 and above, including prior surgical experience. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team.A commitment to patient-centred care and professional development. ACLS certification (or willingness to obtain prior to commencement). Competency with te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori, or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth.
