About the Role We have an exciting opportunity for a Casual Medical Laboratory Scientist to join the team at Taranaki Base Hospital. Our laboratory provides a 24/7 pathology service that supports a wide range of diagnostic needs across the region. In this role, you’ll become part of an experienced and collaborative team, contributing to various disciplines such as Point of Care Testing, Haematology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Transfusion Science, or Specimen Services. As a casual staff member, you may be required to support shift roster coverage, includingafter-hours work. This is a great opportunity to build your experience in a well-equipped laboratory while playing a vital role in the delivery of quality healthcare.About the Service Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Taranaki employs approximately 350 allied health professionals across its services, and our Medical Laboratory team is a vital part of delivering timely, high-quality diagnostic services to the region. Operating 24/7, the laboratory provides essential testing in biochemistry, blood bank, haematology, and microbiology. The service also supports key areas such as Point of Care Testing, Molecular Biology, and Specimen Services. With core hours from 0800 to 1700 on weekdays and continuous coverage after hours and on weekends, the team works collaboratively to support both acute and community healthcare across Taranaki. The service is committed to innovation, accuracy, and maintaining the highest standards of patient care.About you To be successful in this role, you will have a relevant Medical Laboratory Science qualification and be registered (or eligible for registration) with the Medical Sciences Council, as well as: Proven high technical and analytical ability. Excellent attention to detail. Technologically savvy.Able to prioritise tasks and have excellent time management skills. Able to remain calm and work with people under pressure. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a good listener. Be customer-focused and committed to providing a high-quality service to internal and external stakeholders.Be disciplined, self-motivated and maintain a positive approach to work. Be able to delegate tasks, work independently and use initiative to solve problems and make decisions appropriately. Able to relate well to a wide range of people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures.
