About the RoleWe require OMS House Surgeons to join our team. You will be working as part of a team of four House Surgeons (3 dentally qualified and 1 medically qualified). Our department emphasizes clinical teaching and opportunities for skill development in clinics, theatres, on-call duties, and courses through a hands-on approach. We will support your growth in oral surgery, including surgical extractions, biopsies, suturing, and other minor OMS procedures relevant to dental practice or postgraduate training. We also support managing medically complex patients in inpatient and outpatient settings.As early career dentists, progression and upskilling are important. Within the OMS department, we encourage research presentations at hospital dental and OMS conferences, academic publications, and support for RACDS primary examinations. Opportunities for advancement include Senior House Surgeon and OMS Registrar roles, as well as support for future medical degree applications. Financial assistance is available for RACDS exams, IV Sedation courses, and conference presentations.The department covers all aspects of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, including: Management of complex facial trauma Orthognathic and deformity correction surgery Dentoalveolar Surgery (third molar extractions, impacted teeth removal, exposure and bonding, implant placement for oncology patients)Management of benign pathology TMJ surgery, including total joint replacement Unique to Waikato Hospital is the management of head and neck oncology cases, including microvascular free flap reconstruction, providing excellent teaching opportunities. This involves: Work-up of oral cancer patientsManagement within a multidisciplinary team Biopsy of suspicious lesions Peri-operative management of oncology and reconstruction patients Oncological surveillance The unit handles facial infections, ward inpatients, and ED presentations, with strong senior support and guidance from registrars.Teaching, clinical governance, and research are prioritized, with weekly sessions covering radiology, pathology, morbidity and mortality, trauma, and maxillofacial topics. You will work alongside specialists in Paediatric, Prosthodontic, and Special Care Dentistry, with outpatient clinics and surgical theatre sessions.
