Job Description About MPI The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) helps seize export opportunities for New Zealand's primary industries, improve sector productivity, ensure food safety, promote sustainable resource use, and protect against biological risks. Veterinarians play a vital role in MPI's work both within New Zealand and internationally. MPI employs over 300 veterinarians across the country and abroad, providing technical expertise and serving as trusted advisers in the public service.As a public service veterinarian at MPI, you'll work on diverse projects in areas such as Verification Services, Biosecurity, Market Access, and Animal Welfare. We welcome both early career vets and those with broad technical and non-technical experience. About Verification Services Our core purpose is to deliver independent, cost-effective verification, certification, inspection, and clearance programs that meet regulatory requirements. We serve over 2,000 processing companies nationwide, including in the meat, seafood, game, and dairy industries.Export meat is a major focus, constituting 80% of our activities, involving farms, abattoirs, processing plants, cold storage, and other premises. As a veterinarian in Verification Services, you'll contribute to food safety and biosecurity, impacting the quality of New Zealand's agricultural exports. We are recruiting across various regions including Northland, Bay of Plenty, Hawkes Bay, Whanganui/Taranaki, Manawatu, Nelson, Canterbury, Otago, and Invercargill.Why work with us? Benefits Our structured workweek includes paid overtime after 40 hours, shift allowances, and penalties for unsociable hours. Typical hours are Monday–Friday, with some weekend work during peak seasons.
