We are hiring a Senior Site Reliability / GitOps Engineer to our Information Systems (IS) team. This role offers an opportunity for an 'automation-first' senior technologist with a passion for Linux to build a career with Canonical and contribute to the success of those leveraging Ubuntu and open source products. If you have experience in IT operations automation, Infrastructure as Code, and a passion for technology, you will enjoy working with some of the best people in the industry at Canonical.Job Summary The IS team at Canonical supports and maintains all of Canonical's IT production services, which are used by over 60 million Ubuntu users. As a Senior SRE&GitOps engineer, you will be in a unique position to advance operations automation in both our private and public clouds, utilizing open source infrastructure as code software, CI/CD practices, and Canonical's leading automation products. You will also provide critical feedback to developers to improve product operation at scale, through bug reports, pull requests, and collaborative design and implementation efforts. You will be part of a global team of SREs supporting services for our company, customers, and the Ubuntu Community.Responsibilities Lead automation and GitOps development as an embedded tech lead. Collaborate with IS architects to align solutions with architectural vision. Design and develop services as products for organizational use. Apply IaC principles to enhance automation and processes. Automate software operations across clouds, considering distributed system complexities.Maintain operational responsibility for core services, networks, and infrastructure. Develop troubleshooting, capacity planning, and performance analysis skills; set up observability tools like Prometheus, Grafana, Elasticsearch. Support and collaborate with global engineering, operations, and support teams.Dedicate time to larger projects and manual task automation. Share expertise through design sessions, mentorship, and collaborative work. Manage time-critical escalations. Candidate Profile Modern hosting architecture driven by IaC in private and public clouds. Product development mindset focused on creating products, not just solutions.Proficiency in Python with large projects experience. Experience with Kubernetes or similar container orchestration systems. Proven ability to deploy cloud infrastructure via code. Practical Linux networking, routing, and firewall knowledge. Experience with Linux storage solutions like Ceph or databases.Hands-on enterprise Linux server administration experience. Deep understanding of cloud computing technologies. Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science or related field. Effective communication skills in English (email, chat, video, in person). Strong troubleshooting skills from kernel to web layers.Adaptability and quick learning ability. Interest in fast-changing environments. Comfort working within distributed teams. Passion for and familiarity with open source, especially Ubuntu or Debian. What We Offer Distributed work environment with biannual in-person team sprints.
