Advanced or Basic Trainee: Medical Registrar– Stroke Medicine 2026 Training Year – February 2026 Health New Zealand is seeking an exceptional Medical Registrar trainee to join our accredited basic and advanced physician training programme at Whangarei Hospital. The training includes six months of advanced Geriatric Medicine, 12 months of advanced General Medicine, and two years of basic medical training.We are committed to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and prioritize equitable health outcomes for Māori as Tāngata Whenua. About the Role The Department of Older People provides services including acute elderly care, stroke care, inpatient rehabilitation, and outpatient/community services. Northland has a high rate of acute stroke, supported by a ten-bed Acute Stroke Unit.As a Medical Registrar, you will focus on assessing and managing patients with acute stroke and TIA, working closely with your Consultant to develop your skills. Opportunities include initial assessment, thrombolysis, clot retrieval, and weekly neurology clinics. You will participate in the acute medicine on-call roster and gain experience in other specialties such as Cardiology, Nephrology, Oncology, Respiratory, and Gastroenterology.We provide close supervision, teaching, and opportunities to host medical students, enhancing your teaching skills through didactic sessions, journal clubs, and videoconferencing of RACP lectures. You may also participate in the Northern Regional Geriatric Medicine Journal Club in Auckland.
